All the President's men. And women. And children.

This past week-end, Traian Basescu, the Romanian president, came to downtown Bucharest to deliver a speech. A few hours earlier, Emil Constantinescu, a former president, tried to gather a small crowd across the street to protest against the presidential speech. I tried to approach the event in a Christopher Morris kind of way.

Two old men read a promotional paper during the protest against the presidential speech, while a girl runs past.

Former president Emil Constantinescu smiles while talking to his followers. His goatee was almost a trademark when he was in power.

Agrecii Mihaela, 19 years old, holds a flag during the antipresidential rally. "I came from Constanta to Bucharest to rally for freedom", she said.

On the other side of the street, a couple holds hands while waiting for the president to show up.

Police officers waiting for the presidential convoy.

Hundreds of people waited in front of the stage for Basescu to show up.

Police officers in the crowd.

Secret Service agents scout the crowd while the president takes a break inside a tent next to the stage after the speech.

Most TV stations used a lot of logistics in covering the speech, since the president planned his public appearance for prime time hours.

A boy climbed up a tree to get a better view of the president.

Wow! I like your newest batch of pictures so much... the rally and the soccer story. Beautiful light and such soft, velvety depth of field. What lens are you using? For example... on the picture of the President, and the boy in the tree? They are all so lovely!

Columbia is the same, but not the same without you gracing the pages of the Missourian and all...

I hope that luck continues to find you.

You are too kind, Sheila! Actually, it is quite hard back home, because I ran into what I was most afraid of. There are so few working photojournalists that still have drive and enthusiasm around here. I try to understand why, but it's complicated. Part of it is that there's no photojournalism tradition. The other problem is that there are just a couple of real photo editors in the whole country, so there's no feedback for photographers who lose motivation. Anyway, enough about this. It was a lot easier in Columbia, where everyone was so passionate.

As far as the depth of field goes, it's due to the Canon 50mm, f1.4. It's a great lens. Nikon has a similar lens (I remember you were a Nikon user). It's a great lens. I am generally pretty lazy, so I feel that a fixed lens makes me work harder.

Excelent lucrat, Andrei. Ma rog sa vina ziua cand redactorii sefi sau cei ce hotarasc ce poze sa fie publicate in ziare sa aprecieze astfel de fotografii. Trebuie sa luptam pentru asta.

Cand ne "vedem" pe un mess?

you have a 50 f1.4? Very nice. Alex was showing me the 50/1.0 that Canon makes. There was a cool political event that Christopher Morris shot with this lens. Check out the depth of field!

Also, I really love the composition and quality of light on the last image of the boy in the tree. You not only managed to make cool, graphic compositions, but you were able to communicate a sense of what it was like to be at this event.

I like it, but would rather have seen it shot in an Andrei Pungovschi way. But good stuff.

nice stuff. There is a sort of tension to most of the pictures. I like the gangsters/secret police I think guarding a plastic tent. The floating foot in the first one is too small though, doesn't add anything. Hope all is well in Romania.

Dude, great work. There are some really beautiful images here. I'd love to see the rest of your film, I'm sure there are some gems you passed by.

So, guess who just switched to Canon. The 5d and 28mm f1.8 should be here tomorrow. Finally, I can shoot above ASA 800. Wow...
