What We're Worth

Here's a post I thought was really interesting that Michael Rubenstein has recently put on his blog. It speaks of the connection between work quality and financial compensation.

"Getting my work to the point where my images look this way took a lot of time, training and sacrifice. Look at it this way because it is exactly the same thing; I love the way a 5 series BMW drives. I love the way it looks and the way it feels. It is a fantastic car. I could go into a dealership and tell them that I want to give them 25k for the car and they would say no. Not only because it costs 60k but because it is WORTH 60k."

Tibi

I'm working on a story about Tibi, a 25 year-old blind man who teaches English in a school for the vision impaired. He is also Romania's champion in the 100m relay for the vision impaired. I'll post more at the end of the week.

Approximately 300 Chinese workers have been living in makeshift tents across the street from the Chinese embassy in Bucharest, to protest against their Romanian employers who have fired them without paying their salaries for the last two months.

Lucrative Prisoners

Mihai Popandron (1) and Radu Robu, prisoners in the Barcea penitentiary, make shoes in a jail cell, Friday, Feb. 8th, 2009. Popandron and Robu are just two of many prisoners who work for a German company which, despite the financial crisis, has extended their contract with the prison.

Got Milk?

Romanian farmers are no longer allowed to sell milk and cheese in public markets, unless they prove their facilities abide by EU (European Union) standards. Which, in many rural areas, is pure science-fiction. I photographed this lady yesterday in a village north of Bucharest, who trades or sells the milk she gets from the only cow her family owns.

Inauguration Party

The US embassy in Bucharest organized a party where the guests watched the inauguration on TV. The Obama book (4) was a raffle prize. The cat, a resident of the American Cultural Center, was helped by a friend of mine into a pose.

Dacia Rally

An employee of the French-Romanian automotive company Dacia-Renault looks on at the end of a rally in support of a recently introduced government tax on imports of second hand cars in Mioveni, Romania. The company had to temporarily shut down its operations, due to low market demands at the end of last year and is most likely to halt production again.

A few days ago I photographed a traditional horse race in a village in Southern Romania. They baptize the water, the people, the horses, then off they go.

Mr. Paleologu for Esquire

Here are a few of my favourites from the story on the campaign of Mr. Paleologu, that will run in February's Esquire in Romania. Theodor Paleologu gave up his position as Romania's Ambassador to Denmark and Iceland to return to Bucharest and run for Parliament, in hope he could make a change in our politics. Some of his friends, however, consider he does not fit the profile of the Romanian politician, as Mr. Paleologu is well educated and polite. The story ended on the last day of the campaign. He won and is currently the Minister of Culture.
